Sixteen-year-old Jacob Mercer stands on a railway platform in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland in 1924. Jacob has had a violent fight with his father, Esau, and has decided to take the next train out of town. Six years earlier, Esau Mercer returned from the Great War a damaged man, never able to speak of his time in the trenches. When Esau arrives at the station in an attempt to stop Jacob from leaving, the boy seizes the opportunity to help his father heal himself. Jacob agrees to stay – if his father will speak about the War. Neither of them are prepared for what happens when Esau finally gives his devastating and unsparing account of what happened on the day that the Newfoundland Regiment was wiped out. This quintessential Canadian Post-war drama comes from one of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights.

It’s been a long time since Kathryn De Lancie has set foot in Port Perry. Her decades spent in Hollywood have been a whirlwind of leading roles and rave reviews; but even with all the fame and adoration, try as she may, Kathryn has never been able to fully forget her rural roots.

Now here she is, on location, in Port Perry, and the town is vibrating with excitement. Everywhere you go, the only thing being talked about is how Hollywood has come to town with lights and cameras and the hometown girl who followed her dreams. Will local folk catch a glimpse of the town’s prodigal daughter, or will Kathryn manage to hide from her past, the same way she has for years?

This world premier comedy from Port Perry’s own playwright, Graeme Powell, is a fresh look at what makes small towns such fantastic places to live. Mixing huge laughs with local history, familiar names, and instantly recognizable characters, Palmer Park reminds us that there is as feeling in our hearts which we all have in common… home.

DYNAMITE DAMES

Book by Liz Auston and Conrad Boyce

Producers: Liz Auston and Joanna Thornton
Director: Kathy Knight
Music Director: Alissa Smith
Choreographer:
Presented by SCS Musicals/Scugog Choral Society

PERFORMANCES:
Evenings: April 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 at 8pm
Matinees: April 6, 7, 13 at 2pm

The divas are back! Dynamite Dames is the creation of local playwrights Liz Auston and Conrad Boyce, originally performed in 2004 and one of SCS’s most-requested musicals. Get ready for 2 hours of dynamite performances as the divas and show-stopping hits jkeep on coming! At its heart Dynamite Dames celebrates the spirit of women. For years Jane has lovingly dedicated herself to the wants and needs of a wonderful husband and two nearly-grown kids. A promising performer in a past-life, her only singing engagements in recent years were those during tub time when the kids were little and her dramatic repertoire rests solidly with “Good Night Moon”. When a local theatre troupe shockingly earns first-dibs at staging a huge Broadway mega-hit — with lots of great roles for women — Jane musters the courage to squelch self-doubt and audition for the show. But Jane is not alone in wanting to shake free of a familiar role, as she is joined by a multitude of over-qualified, talented women who seem to share in a similar dream.

Dames Night – Friday April 5th at 7pm – Come as your favourite Broadway Diva (or Divo) and join us for delicious eats and light beverages before the curtain rises. After the show, stick around to meet the cast and chat with the creators of Dynamite Dames as well as members of the original 2004 cast… a fun night! (Licensed event, ages 19 years of age and over)
